The New York Mets can look forward to getting Jacob deGrom and Max Scherzer back in action later this summer, but how long will it be?

The Mets have the second-best record in the majors and have a five-game lead at the top of the NL East. Things are going pretty well so far in 2022.

The scary thing? They could get even better with the return of two outstanding pitchers to the lineup.

Jacob deGrom has been missing all season with a shoulder injury. Max Scherzer has been out since mid-May with an oblique strain. They’re both on their way back.

Mets injury update: Jacob deGrom and Max Scherzer timetable revealed

Ken Rosenthal reported that Scherzer could be back as soon as late June, though July is more realistic. For deGrom, the target is July as well.

Scherzer was 5-1 with an ERA of 2.54 before suffering his injury. There won’t be a rush to get him back in the lineup but once he’s there he’ll hope to continue the success he’s had in his first season in New York.

deGrom was an All-Star for the fourth time last year but he suffered a season-ending injury and hasn’t pitched since. The road back has been frustrating with unexpected hurdles including the shoulder injury that landed him on the 60-day IL. As with Scherzer, New York is likely to ease him back in after such a long time out.

The important thing is that the Mets should have the two pitchers back on the mound and starting for them during the second half of the season. When it comes down to it, having them healthy for the postseason will be critical.
