David Bednar rumors: Do Phillies make sense?

The Phils removed Corey Knebel as closer this week in favor of a by-committee approach. Knebel and Jeurys Familia were high-priced offseason acquisitions, both of whom have failed to provide much of a spark to what was the worst bullpen in all of baseball last season.

Bednar, at least on paper, would be far better than anyone the Phillies bullpen currently has to offer. He would cost an arm and a leg, as previously mentioned, but Dave Dombrowski has never been shy about trading top prospects away. Look no further than his days with the Detroit Tigers, and after that the Boston Red Sox.

FanSided MLB insider Robert Murray wrote about the Phillies’ need for a bullpen upgrade in his most recent Inside the Clubhouse column:

"“The Phillies will move to a closer-by-committee approach, though Seranthony Dominguez could emerge as the closer moving forward. But the Phillies are expected to target bullpen upgrades at the trade deadline, which has seemingly become an annual tradition.”"

Those words, while harsh, are 100 percent accurate. Philadelphia cannot build a bullpen on their own volition. They need help from the outside, and an upgrade that is essentially foolproof.

Bednar is just that.
