Alabama football: 3 offseason questions Crimson Tide need to answer
By John Buhler
2. Who steps up in the Alabama receiving corps after key offseason departures?
A big reason why the Crimson Tide were so dominant a year ago was because of the depth of their receiving corps. With guys like Jameson Williams, John Metchie III and Slade Bolden all departing for the NFL, as well as Agiye Hall leaving the program by way of the transfer portal, who is going to step up in their absences? Who is Bryce Young going to rifle the pigskin to this college season?
Adding Jermaine Burton in the transfer portal after he turned heel on Georgia is massive. Iron Bowl hero Ja’Corey Brooks is still here, as is tight end extraordinaire Cameron Latu. As long as receivers like JoJo Earle and Traeshon Holden can play up this fall, the Crimson Tide should be golden in the receiving department. It helps to have the reigning Heisman Trophy winner starring at quarterback.
The receiving corps may regress a little bit, but a more well-rounded offense will serve Alabama.
1. Can Bryce Young and Will Anderson take their games to an even higher level?
Alabama is blessed to have the two best players in the sport on their team entering next year with Young at quarterback and Will Anderson being an all-world pass-rusher out on the edge. They project as top-10 picks in the 2023 NFL Draft if all goes according to plan. The question is if they can build off their sensational sophomore seasons and take their games to an even higher level.
Young will get dinged by NFL Draft scouts for his size, but stands a great chance to be the first repeat Heisman Trophy winner since Archie Griffin did in it the 1970s while at Ohio State. Anderson may be the first non-quarterback taken in next year’s draft. Anything short of a unanimous All-American season for him will be a disappointment. They have to carry this team.
If Young and Anderson play up to their lofty expectations, they will leave Alabama as champions.
