3 pitchers Mets should trade for after latest injury
By Scott Rogust
Now, we get to a pitcher that could be near the top of the starter trade market. That is Tyler Mahle of the Cincinnati Reds.
Ahead of the season, general manager Nick Krall said that he does not expect to trade Mahle or Luis Castillo. Once the season started, reports indicated that the team has changed their tone and are willing to listen to offers for both of their young pitchers. Out of the two, Mahle would be the cheapest option in terms of surrendering assets.
Mahle struggled early on in the season, but has improved as of late. In fact, he struck out 28 batters and walked just four in the first three starts of the month of June (21.0 innings). In those starts, including nine scoreless innings in the teams 5-3 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks on June 14, Mahle owns a 1.71 ERA.
Through 14 starts, Mahle posted a 4.46 ERA, a 1.246 WHIP, 86 strikeouts and 30 walks through 74.2 innings.
The Reds are going to be patient when it comes to trading their top players, so do not expect the Mets to negotiate a trade right away. It may take until the deadline. But, Mahle should be a name the team hones in on.
