2) White Sox trade candidate to target on the Cubs: David Robertson

David Robertson, on the other hand, is someone the Cubs need to trade this year. He signed a one-year deal with them this offseason and has become an excellent closer. Any team in need of an upgrade in the ninth inning or even earlier should get on the phone with the Cubs about Robertson. This includes the White Sox who would ideally use him as a setup man.

The 2022 White Sox bullpen has been weaker than many anticipated. Injuries are to blame for some of the struggles. They’ve given many more innings to guys they didn’t expect to put on the mound.

At closer, they have Liam Hendriks (when healthy) and Kendall Graveman as a suitable backup. Robertson could be another high-leverage reliever to add to the mix. If Joe Kelly turns out to be a bust for them, he’d be even more essential to add at the trade deadline.

Unless they turn things around quickly, the White Sox will be playing catch up for the next few weeks behind the Minnesota Twins. Adding Robertson as early as possible would greatly benefit them. Hopefully, if it does happen, they get better results than last year’s trade for Craig Kimbrel—the high-performing closer who was terrific with the Cubs only to struggle once he joined the White Sox.
