Braves: 3 Cubs trade deadline targets worth pursuing
By Tim Boyle
2) Braves trade target on the Cubs: David Robertson
Here’s to you, David Robertson, you’ve become a great closer once again, whoa, whoa, whoa.
Robertson is a top candidate for Comeback Player of the Year. The last time he pitched regularly in the big leagues was in 2018 with the New York Yankees. He tossed fewer than 20 innings from 2019-2021 and has been a huge part of the Cubs this season. He belongs in the All-Star Game and also on a contender where his rejuvenation could be put to good use.
The Braves aren’t quite in desperate need of relief help but adding him into the mix wouldn’t hurt. Kenley Jansen has been solid as the closer. What the Braves could use is a second righty they can fully trust in those big spots. Otherwise, they’re putting a lot of faith in veterans like Collin McHugh and Jesse Chavez or the more inexperienced Jackson Stephens.
Robertson would be a superb backup option to close games if Jansen went down or suffered from an unnamed syndrome that all closers seem to catch at some point later in their career. You’ve seen it dozens of times. One day, a closer just suddenly doesn’t have it anymore.
There will be plenty of suitors for Robertson so Atlanta will need to meet a good asking price to obtain him from the Cubs. He’d be worth it.
