7. Gary Payton II — May 1, 2022
It’s Game 1 of the Western Conference Semifinals between the Golden State Warriors and the Memphis Grizzlies, early in the first quarter at FedExForum in Memphis.
Before Dillon Brooks and Ja Morant get the chance to double team him, Steph Curry throws a pin-point pass to the rolling Gary Payton II. GP2 takes one dribble as Desmond Bane moves over to help, but the only help he provides is to Payton, giving him somebody to put on a poster.
GP2 cranks it way back and sends it home right on top of Bane. GP2 looks right at Bane, staring at his victim while performing his scratch-the-head dunk celebration that he first brought out on Goga Bitadze back in January. Jordan Poole and Damion Lee are shown on the bench doing a subtle version of the Grizzlies rev-it-up celebration, mocking the Grizz in their own building.
Mike Breen on the call: “Oh, ohhh! Gary Payton with the flush! Goes right at Bane. He’s got that type of athleticism at 6-foot-3.”
Mark Jackson adds: “Wow.”
Jackson on the replay: “GP are you with me!? Bane! That’s a grown-man move, tremendous athleticism.”
Tremendous athleticism indeed from a 2021-22 T-Shirt All-Star.
