3 Yankees trade rumors they should turn into reality

3. Yankees trade rumors to turn into reality: Ian Happ
An alternative to Benintendi, Chicago Cubs outfielder Ian Happ might be even more intriguing for a slightly longer option. He doesn’t reach free agency until after next season. He’d give the Yankees an obvious option for the outfield mix next year while also providing them with infield innings if needed.
Happ is so versatile that it’s foolish for teams looking to add a bat to skip over him entirely. He’s also having a very productive season for the Cubs and ranks among the league leaders in OBP. He has a lot in common with Benintendi but with a lesser glove and a little more power. Benintendi is the guy you trade for to add hits and to clog up the bases with the bonus of a Gold Glove mitt. In Happ’s case, you’re getting some pop, a lot of versatility, and a guy on pace to maybe have the best season of his career.
Happ is a good compromise on all tools. He isn’t a bad fielder—he’s just not as good as Benintendi.
There are a lot of ways the Yankees could use him. He’d fit in well with the depth they already do have but would push Gallo to the bench more often than not.
The best trade the Yankees could make with the Cubs might be one where Happ and Robertson are included. If the starting staff continues to perform the way they have, it might be the only move they need to make.
