3 players from the 2021 Cubs who are failing miserably elsewhere
Former Cubs and current Los Angeles Dodgers closer Craig Kimbrel
In his first two seasons with the Chicago Cubs, Craig Kimbrel was a shell of his former self.
From 2010 through 2018 (his last season before joining the Cubs), he had a 1.91 ERA with an average of 60 games and 37 saves per season. He also had a 212 ERA+ (112 percent above league average), a 1.96 FIP (suggesting that his results were very true), a 0.92 WHIP, and an average of 3.5 walks and 14.7 strikeouts per nine innings.
In his first two seasons with the Cubs, he had an ERA of 6.00 in 41 appearances with 15 saves. He also had a 6.29 FIP (suggesting he actually had some good luck), a 75 ERA+, a 1.528 WHIP, 6.0 walks, and 2.8 home runs per nine innings. The only thing that he kept very close to what he did was his strikeout rate (14.5 K/9).
But in 2021, he was great for them as he had 0.49 ERA (1.10 FIP) in 39 games with 23 saves before they traded him to the White Sox.
In a set-up role for them, he struggled again (5.09 ERA, 4.56 FIP) in 24 games. He became a free agent after the season and the Dodgers signed him to a four-year deal for $58 million.
But with them, he is 1-3 with a 4.13 ERA in 25 games with 13 saves. He has an ERA+ of 103 and a 1.542 WHIP, which is the second-worst in his career after the 2019 season. His hit rate (9.4 H/9) is also the worst in his career and his walk rate is 4.5 per nine innings, which is also a bit elevated.
