Astros injury update: Latest on Yordan Alvarez, Jeremy Peña

A massive collision between Yordan Alvarez and Jeremy Peña left the Astros without two of their best players against the Mets. How are they doing now?

The Houston Astros got quite the scare on Wednesday when Yordan Alvarez had to be carted off the field after a collision with Jeremy Peña.

The left fielder and shortstop ran into each other while trying to make a play on a pop fly to shallow left. Peña actually completed the catch and got the out, but it wasn’t without a cost.

Alvarez and Peña shared the brunt of the collision, leaving both down for several moments. While Peña was able to walk off under his own power, Alvarez took a cart off the field.

After the game, which Houston won 2-0, manager Dusty Baker gave an update.

“They’re being evaluated by the doctors,” Baker said per Mark Berman. “Peña said he was okay, of course. Yordan wanted to stay in the game. Yordan’s not a guy you pick to run into and neither is Peña because both of them are well built.”

Alvarez was able to make it into the clubhouse under his own power, per Chandler Rome. So that’s a good sign at least. However, he was not made available to the media after.

The team later revealed they are being evaluated for concussions, per Rome.

Concussions could hold the two out for a few games but it’s too early to say how long Houston may be without them.

As for Wednesday’s game, Chas McCormick came into the game for Alvarez while Mauricio Dubon took Peña’s place in the infield.

The Astros and Mets each took shutouts into the ninth inning before Jason Castro broke the deadlock with a two-run home run.
