2) Cubs rumors: Kyle Hendricks could have a renaissance with the Giants

Going from Wrigley Field, where balls occasionally decide to fly a little further without much warning, to San Francisco might provide us with some vintage Hendricks. The playoff-hopeful San Francisco Giants have Logan Webb and Carlos Rodon pitching very well at the top of the rotation. The next three veteran starters have been pretty bad.

Alex Wood is 5-6 with a 5.05 ERA after 14 starts, Alex Cobb is 3-3 with a 5.48 ERA after 10, and Anthony DeSclafani is 0-2 with a 9.95 ERA following his 5 appearances. The Giants already have a bit of a crisis with their starting lineup. They aren’t going to go very far with a two-man rotation either.

Fortunately, the Giants do have several notable outfield prospects that should entice the Cubs. And if they want to take a page out of the 2021 Los Angeles Dodgers’ playbook, maybe they look to make an even bigger trade with catcher Willson Contreras involved in it, too.

This kind of deal would hardly match up to last year’s Dodgers trade with the Washington Nationals for Max Scherzer and Trea Turner. It is comparable if only because Hendricks and Contreras could each help fill a major need for San Francisco. With one of their outfield prospects headlining the deal along with Patrick Bailey thrown in to ensure Chicago gets some future insurance behind the plate, these two teams might be a good match.
