3 players from the 2021 Guardians who are failing miserably elsewhere
Outfielder Eddie Rosario (Atlanta Braves)
The Guardians traded Rosario to the Atlanta Braves after just half of a season in 2021.
For the Guardians, Rosario hit .254/.296/.389 with an OPS+ of 87 with a 0.6 rWAR in 78 games. But for the Braves in 2021, he hit .271/.330/.573 with an OPS+ of 131 and a 0.5 rWAR in 33 games. He also won the 2021 NLCS MVP award.
He was a free agent at the end of the season but he re-signed with the Braves on a two-year deal worth $18 million and a $9 million team option for a third year.
However, he has spent most of the season on the injured list with laser eye surgery. In 49 plate appearances before hitting the injured list, he was awful at the plate as he hit just .068/.163/.091 with a -27 OPS+. He also had a mind-bogglingly bad -6 Defensive Runs Saved in just 12 games in right field.
Combine all of it together and he had -1.2 rWAR in just 15 games, which is the worst among any of 1,261 players who have played in the majors in 2022.
He likely won’t return to game action for at least another month, so perhaps he can be like a late-season addition as he was in 2021 and turn things around but at least to start the 2022 season, he was (quite literally) the worst player in the sport.
