3) Cardinals players failing miserably in 2022: Paul DeJong

After sifting through as many names as possible from the 2021 roster, a conclusion was made: the Cardinals held onto more than just memories from last year. They also kept a lot of players.

Paul DeJong is still a member of the organization. He just isn’t with St. Louis any longer. Consider this a quick check in on how he is doing in Triple-A where things haven’t been too great.

DeJong has been one of the strangest shortstops. He is a good fielder and a power hitter that struggles to reach base or even hit for average. One look at his offensive statistics and you’d think he was a power hitting corner outfielder.

DeJong began the year with the Cardinals but after hitting .130/.209/.208 with only a single home run in his first 86 plate appearances, they demoted him.

Now in Triple-A, DeJong has done little to push himself back toward a big league promotion. He has slashed .219/.268/.475 versus inferior pitching. If there is one promising accomplishment, he does have 11 home runs and 36 RBI in his first 179 plate appearances.

Will DeJong see major league action again for the Cardinals? Currently a member of the Memphis Redbirds, he’ll have to play a little bit better and do it before the trade deadline when the Cardinals could acquire a shortstop upgrade.
