3) Yankees Rumors: Ian Happ would fit in perfectly on the roster

Ian Happ is having an exceptionally good year for a bad Chicago Cubs team. He’s hitting for a higher average than he typically does and his OBP numbers are among the best in baseball. A free agent after next season, he’s someone the Cubs would be smart to start shopping around already. Who knows what could lie ahead for him?

Happ would fit in well with the Yankees’ attitude toward flexible players. There is a reason they added Marwin Gonzalez to their bench. Back when they signed DJ LeMahieu, they loved his infield versatility. Happ is just like them but younger and more of an outfielder. Left field is his primary position this season but the Yankees can get away with using him regularly in center field and even at second base if needed.

The power numbers Happ can put up might be hard to predict. That’s okay. They get enough long balls from Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton. They can exchange home runs for more regular hits—something Gallo and Hicks haven’t given them many of.

Happ’s trade value may have never been higher than it is right now. The expanded playoffs mean there are fewer sellers. This makes him, a non-rental, a serious trade candidate.
