5 free agency destinations for Jacob deGrom: Houston Astros

Why not the Houston Astros? They seem to land every over-the-hill starting pitcher that hits free agency or becomes available via trade. They also love projects. They are a destination ball club for just about any arm looking for a place to excel. Landing there has kept Justin Verlander feeling young. It might be the perfect place for Jacob deGrom to shack up for a few years.

The Astros and Mets rekindled an old rivalry this year with Houston getting the better of them. In all four games the two teams played, it was Houston that was victorious.

deGrom signing with the Astros might feel like he agreed to a deal with a team on Saturn. However, as a high-profile ball club with some villainous tendencies in recent years, it might go against everything Mets fans feel deGrom stands for: truth, justice, and high velocity strikeouts in abundance.

The Astros will be in the market for a veteran starter this year at the trade deadline and maybe even again in the winter depending on who they may add and what lies ahead for Verlander. Verlander and deGrom on the same staff, even for just a season, would be a dangerous duo.

But so would deGrom sticking around with the Mets and pairing up with Max Scherzer. Hey, maybe if deGrom ends up in Houston, Verlander can sign with the Mets and teammate up with Scherzer again. It can’t end worse than the Brooklyn Nets.
