Chris Sale throws major-league hissy fit after bad outing against Yankees minor-league team

Red Sox starter Chris Sale is on his way back to the major leagues, but a rehab outing gone wrong on Wednesday night had him in his feelings.

You will not like Sale when he’s angry.

Sale’s always had a fiery temper. This is the same man who cut up throwback uniforms as a member of the Chicago White Sox so his team wouldn’t wear them. It’s the same man who responds to questions about his COVID-19 vaccination status with the verbal version of an intense stare.

The 33-year-old hasn’t been the true Boston ace since 2019, but he’s hoping to revive his career at the front of the Sox rotation in 2022. His outbursts are already in midseason form.

In his latest rehab outing for the WooSox, Sale struggled with his control, walking five.

Sale got the frustration out of his system, and spoke to the media postgame.

“I was just out there fishing today,” Sale told the Boston Globe. “Nothing to hang your hat on, that’s for sure.”

Nonetheless, he’s still ready to join the Boston rotation. This was the lefty’s fourth and potentially final rehab outing, despite his struggles with control.

“I’m very ready,” Sale said. “I know today was a little bit of a hiccup but it’s nothing that can’t be ironed out. … I just want to be a part of it. I want to get back to doing my job and pulling my weight.”

How Sale will be employed remains the biggest question. There is a hole in the Sox rotation should Alex Cora go that route. However, coming out of the bullpen could benefit Boston as well.

Expect an answer in the coming days once Sale is promoted to the Red Sox roster. Until then, clubhouse attendants beware.
