The San Francisco Giants designated veteran left-handed pitcher Jake McGee for assignment.

The San Francisco Giants were looking to replicate the success they had last season. So far, they are 41-41 entering July 9. Ahead of their game against the rival San Diego Padres, the Giants made a flurry of roster moves, one of which spells the end of a veteran pitcher out of the bullpen.

Left-handed pitcher Jake McGee was designated for assignment by the Giants, ending his tenure with the team after signing with them ahead of the 2020 season. The news was confirmed by FanSided MLB insider Robert Murray.

In additional moves, the Giants reinstated outfielder Luis Gonzalez from the 10-day injured list, placed right-handed pitcher Zack Littell on the 15-day injured list, and recalled right-hander Yunior Marte from Triple-A Sacramento.

Giants designate Jake McGee for assignment

Prior to joining the Giants, McGee was a member of the World Series-winning Los Angeles Dodgers in 2020. That year, McGee recorded a 2.66 ERA, a 0.836 WHIP, 33 strikeouts, and three walks in 20.1 innings of work.

McGee stayed in the NL West division, signing a two-year, $5 million contract with San Francisco. The left-hander had similar success in 2021, putting up a 2.72 ERA and a 0.905 WHIP, while successfully recording 31 saves in 36 opportunities.

But in 2022, McGee’s numbers have skyrocketed. Through 24 games, McGee carries a bloated 7.17 ERA and has a strikeout-to-walk ratio of 1.83 (11 strikeouts to six walks). In fact, he already has surrendered 17 earned runs, one shy of his 2021 total of 18.

McGee last pitched in the July 8 game against the Padres, where he surrendered two earned runs on four hits in one inning of work in the 6-3 loss.

With the concerning numbers, the Giants opted to designate McGee for assignment.
