The NHL Free Agent Frenzy has officially begun, what are three moves you may have missed?

NHL Free Agency is off to a booming start, as a boatload of star players found new homes today including Andre Burakovsky (Seattle Kraken), Jan Rutta (Pittsburgh Penguins), Oskar Lindblom (San Jose Sharks), Claude Giroux (Ottawa Senators), Darcy Kuemper (Washington Capitals) and Andrew Copp (Detroit Red Wings) amongst many, many others.

In the first few hours of free agency being open for business, a handful of the names featured on our list of ten players to watch in free agency came off the board.

With that being said, there are sure to be some moves that flew under the radar of some during the chaos that has been today in the NHL world.

NHL Free Agent Frenzy: 3 moves you may have missed

3. Pittsburgh Penguins re-sign Evgeni Malkin

16-year veteran (all with the Pittsburgh Penguins) Evgeni Malkin won’t end up on the free agent market for very long. As a matter of fact, he wasn’t on the market at all. Last night, the Penguins announced themselves that they were bringing back the franchise icon on a four-year contract that will see him earn an average annual value (AAV) of $6.1MM per year.

Malkin, 35, is a seven-time NHL All-Star and three-time Stanley Cup champion. He ranks near the top of the Penguins’ all-time rankings in a number of categories including games played, overtime goals, assists, power-play goals, and overall points. This move doesn’t come as too much of a surprise even though the Penguins had kept their interest in bringing Malkin back somewhat quiet to the general public.
