Miguel Cabrera’s latest career milestone is absolutely hilarious

Miguel Cabrera is collecting milestones as his career winds down, but one he reached on Tuesday night might be the most memorable — and it’s definitely hilarious.

Miguel Cabrera got his 3,000th career hit earlier this season, and as his Hall of Fame career winds down, the next milestone seems to always be just around the corner. He also happens to be having a solid season, wielding a .287 batting average and 34 RBI entering Wednesday on his way to earning his 12th career All-Star selection (his first since 2016).

On Tuesday night against the Kansas City Royals, Cabrera went 0-for-3 with a walk. But with two RBI, he is now tied with Ted Williams for 14th on the all-time list with 1,838 career runs driven in.

Standing on second base in the seventh inning Tuesday night, with the Royals in a shift, Cabrera took off for third. Everyone in Kauffman Stadium was surprised, including the Detroit Tigers dugout and the three key Royals involved in the play: pitcher Jose Cuas, catcher MJ Melendez and third baseman Emmanuel Rivera.

"“Yeah, 100 percent,” Royals reliever Jose Cuas said. “That’s the last thing on my mind, is that he was going to steal a base. He got it. And he scored. Beat me. Fooled me.”"

No wonder Melendez’s throw ended up in left field, allowing Cabrera to score.

It was Cabrera’s 40th career stolen base, his first steal since 2020, and just his third steal attempt over the last seven seasons.

The Tigers’ social media team was sure to note the milestone for the long-time slugger.

Cabrera is in line to finish his career with a nice, round 40 stolen bases. That’s the way it should be.
