Matt Carpenter’s latest home run should enrage Red Sox fans
By Mark Powell
Matt Carpenter’s latest home run, which extended the Yankees lead, wouldn’t have been a home run in 29 other ballparks.
Carpenter has been a tremendous story so far this season. After a brief stint in Texas, the former St. Louis Cardinals star signed on with the Yankees. Since he made his way to the majors, Carpenter has been nothing short of spectacular.
The multi-positional star has 13 home runs in 30 games in Pinstripes. He is slashing .365/.472/.946 so far in the Bronx. The comparisons to Babe Ruth are, of course, a joke, but it does show exactly what Carpenter means to this team moving forward.
Yet, Carp’s latest home run will likely enrage folks in Boston, if only because they’re looking for something to be upset about. Carpenter’s 3-run shot to extend the Yanks lead — his second of the night — wouldn’t have been a homer in 29 of 30 ballparks. Thank you, short porch.
Yankees: How did Matt Carpenter turn his career around?
His last season in St. Louis, Carpenter hit .169 in a relatively large sample size — 130 games — and ran out of leash. The Cardinals cut him loose, and he failed to make much of an impression in a short stint in Texas.
Still, he was a former All-Star on the open market. Did anyone make the call besides New York?
Apparently not.
“The thing that’s so confusing to me,” Carpenter said, “is that nobody responded [except] the best team in baseball.”
Whether the lack of interest was warranted or not, it’s safe to say the signing has worked out from New York’s point of view.
