Red Sox: Building the ideal trade deadline for Boston
The Boston Red Sox need to make a trade with the Colorado Rockies
Two of the bigger weaknesses for the Boston Red Sox are at first base and in the bullpen. The Colorado Rockies could help the Red Sox in both areas.
At first base, C.J. Cron has been one of the best first basemen in the sport this year. Entering Saturday, the 2022 All-Star has played in 88 games and he is in the top 10 in a lot of categories in the NL.
- .296 batting average (10th)
- .553 slugging percentage (4th)
- 21 home runs (5th)
- 69 RBI (2nd)
- 100 hits (6th)
Bobby Dalbec has hit .208/.289/.348 on the season so Cron would be a big upgrade. Cron also is contracted through next season. With designated hitter J.D. Martinez becoming a free agent after this season, Cron could be the team’s DH next year and top prospect Triston Casas could take over at first base.
For the bullpen, the Red Sox could trade for either closer Daniel Bard or setup man Alex Colomé.
The Red Sox are familiar with Bard since he pitched for them in the majors from 2009 through 2013. This year for Colorado, he is fourth in the NL in saves with 19 and he has a 2.08 ERA. He would be an upgrade at closer but the Rockies may hold on to him.
An alternative would be to trade for setup man Alex Colomé. In 35 games, Colomé has a 2.94 ERA (2.67 FIP) so he also has had a very good season. Both Bard and Colomé are free agents at the end of the season.
