Cardinals: 3 prospects St. Louis would have to sell in any Juan Soto trade
By Tim Boyle
3. Cardinals would need to trade Masyn Winn for Juan Soto
Masyn Winn might not be a top 100 prospect right now but he is the fourth-best prospect in the St. Louis system. The young shortstop tore pitchers apart in High-A this year before a promotion to Double-A where he is currently batting .260/.335/.432 with six home runs through 195 plate appearances.
Winn has the potential to be an ideal leadoff hitter. He has 57 stolen bases in his first 173 games. He has been a smart runner, too. Thus far, he has been caught only 7 times.
The .267/.342/.414 slash line he owns might not look so impressive but his debut year in 2021 hit a rough patch when he was first promoted to High-A. Fortunately, he went from hitting .210 there last year to .349 in his second opportunity.
Winn is probably a sneaky-good shortstop prospect few will see coming up the pipeline. It’s great news for the Cardinals who have an opening at the position. However, in any trade for Juan Soto, the Nationals are going to want to get greedy and pluck him away along with Walker and Herrera, too.
That’s probably just the start of what it would take for the Cardinals to have a chance at adding Soto to their lineup. Let the bidding war begin.
