1. Another top-flight edge rusher

The Cowboys spent a first-round pick on Micah Parsons in last year’s draft to fortify their front seven for years to come. They didn’t necessarily expect him to become their best edge rusher during his rookie campaign.

That isn’t a bad outcome for the defensive coaching staff, but the need to make Parsons a classic edge rusher last season does highlight the team’s lack of depth at edge rusher. A healthy Demarcus Lawrence can be a big boost for the team if he continues to successfully fight off Father Time. The team also needs either Dorance Armstrong or rookie Sam Williams to pop next season if their defense is going to be elite.

It’s fair to say that Dallas doesn’t absolutely need their defense to be elite to be a Super Bowl contender, but it would really help take pressure off Prescott and the offense. Pass rush from both edges becomes vital during the postseason. It’s unclear if the Cowboys have enough talent up front to achieve that lofty goal.

The team’s coaching staff likely believes shifting Parsons down to edge rusher on obvious passing downs can be their ace in the hole. That can solve the edge rushing issue but it creates a void at linebacker the team can’t cover. Finding the right role for Parsons will be a massive challenge for the Cowboys if they want to win a Super Bowl.
