Mets get injury update on Jacob deGrom in All-Star news drop
The New York Mets may have to wait a while longer to get Jacob deGrom back after an injury setback involving his shoulder.
The Mets have eagerly awaited the return of Cy Young-winning pitcher Jacob deGrom this year after a full calendar year out with injury.
It looks like they might have to wait just a little bit longer with the pitcher dealing with another setback.
Scheduled to pitch a simulation game on Tuesday, deGrom will instead delay the sim a couple of days.
Jacob deGrom injury update: Mets must deal with new setback
“Jacob deGrom experienced mild muscle soreness around his shoulder on Sunday,” Anthony DiComo tweeted on Tuesday night. “He played catch on Monday and Tuesday without issue, but the Mets pushed back his simulated game to Thursday ‘out of an abundance of caution.'”
As for what that means for DeGrom’s return date, it’s obviously not ideal.
DiComo said it’s “difficult” to expect a return in time to face the Yankees with a two-game series coming up on July 26 and 27. The rehab plan originally targeted the Yankees series or the Padres’ series before it as possible return dates.
If deGrom needs another rehab start in order for New York to feel confident putting him on the mound for real, “his return wouldn’t happen until August,” DiComo predicted.
So long as deGrom can make it through his Thursday simulation game, this should be considered a minor setback. Still, when you’re dealing with a player who healed from a flexor issue only to suffer a stress reaction in his shoulder, you really can never be too cautious.
deGrom last played on July 7, 2021. He had to be shut down for the second half of the 2021 season but was expected to get back to start the 2022 season. Then his spring training shoulder problem emerged and pushed his return back another few months.
The waiting game for Mets fans continues.
