1. Yankees rumors: David Bednar is the blockbuster reliever to seek

Originally, it was Joe Mantiply that seemed like the All-Star fit for the Yankees. However, given the recent injury to Miguel Castro and the success of some other lefties in their bullpen, the Yankees should focus on adding a righty.

Easily the best and potentially available option for the Yankees is David Bednar. The Pittsburgh Pirates closer is 3-3 with a 2.89 ERA to go along with 16 saves. An impressive 11.7 strikeouts per nine show us just how overpowering he can be.

Acquiring Bednar would take a nice haul from the Yankees’ farm system because of the amount of control he has left. He hasn’t even reached arbitration yet. The Pirates, as frugal as they are, don’t have a need to trade him for anything short of a strong return.

It was previously believed that they might not be shopping him. However, with far less elite numbers at the break, the Pirates may want to reconsider. Why not deal him away while his value remains high? He is a closer after all. By this time next season, he might be a mop-up man.

There will be plenty of Yankees rumors over the next two weeks with them targeting everything from a starting pitcher to a bat to even a bullpen upgrade. From the All-Star rosters, it’s Castillo, Happ, and Bednar that would fit the best.
