1. Jimmy Garoppolo trade rumors: Browns need options with Deshaun Watson’s looming suspension

If only the Cleveland Browns had a reliable, familiar backup quarterback with Deshaun Watson imminently facing a lengthy suspension for the 2022 season — you know, someone like Baker Mayfield.

But alas, the franchise botched the Mayfield situation worse than a plastic surgeon in a back alley, so they are now looking at Jacoby Brissett to start multiple games, if not the whole season, this year. There are certainly worse options to have than the free agent they added this offseason, but there is a chance they could improve their options with someone like Jimmy Garoppolo.

Now, Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com is already reporting that the Browns are not expected to go after a Garoppolo trade, but that doesn’t mean they should or that their plans won’t change. And frankly, that’s what should happen.

Even if Garoppolo doesn’t end up being the starter for however long Watson is out, they could use a good, old-fashioned training camp battle to determine the right choice at quarterback and, just as pressingly, a quality backup plan for this season. What’s more, they could get out of the Garoppolo contract after this season with ease as they move forward.
