Packers: 3 2022 roster holes that could cost Aaron Rodgers a Super Bowl
2. Packers need to get David Bakhtiari back at left tackle (and healthy)
David Bakhtiari is one of the best offensive tackles in the NFL when he’s on the field. He’s an elite blindside protector and, at just 30 years old, should theoretically still have plenty of miles left in the tank, certainly enough to keep Rodgers upright for the remainder of the quarterback’s career in Green Bay.
The problem, of course, has been Bakhtiari hasn’t been healthy in the past year. Not only did his recovery from a torn ACL limit him to just one game last year but he’s apparently been slow to progress this offseason throughout workouts. And that should be of concern to this offense if that doesn’t change with training camp about to get underway.
In Bakhtiari’s absence, the Packers largely relied on a revolving door of Yosh Nijman, Billy Turner and Elgton Jenkins to fill in at the tackle spots. Jenkins is a stud but he is best on the inside, as is Turner. And as for Nijman, he was far from a disaster, but he is an average-at-best player at this point in his young career, entering his fourth NFL season.
Green Bay’s offensive line survived well without Bakhtiari for most of last season. With a likely change in how the offense runs this season given personnel changes, though, having that unit be a certified strength could be of paramount importance. As such, they need to get their stud back at left tackle sooner and later to ensure they aren’t weak in an area where they truly can’t afford to be.
