Red Sox rumors: 3 All-Stars not named Juan Soto to trade for at the deadline
Red Sox trade target: Rockies first baseman C.J. Cron
At first base, the Red Sox have been longing for someone to fill in until prospect Triston Casas (#14 overall, according to MLB.com) comes up. They’ve had Bobby Dalbec at first but he hasn’t exactly been tearing the cover off of the ball.
Overall at first base, the Red Sox have a 74 wRC+, which is second-worst in baseball. C.J. Cron could help fill in at first base in the meantime and help in a different way next year.
Cron is 10th in the National League in batting average (.298), fourth in slugging percentage (.553), sixth in hits (103), ninth in doubles (21), fifth in home runs (21), and third in RBI (69). Defensively, he is the third-best first baseman in the sport this year with 5 Defensive Runs Saved (DRS).
He is signed through the 2023 season so the Red Sox could have him play first base for the rest of this season. When Casas is ready (since he has been injured recently, it might not be until next year), Cron and Casas can split time between first base and DH. After all, J.D. Martínez will be a free agent at the end of this season.
