2. New York Mets

The New York Mets made a variety of win-now moves heading into the 2022 season. They signed outfielder Starling Marte in free agency and traded for Athletics pitcher Chris Bassitt. But their biggest move was getting three-time Cy Young award winner Max Scherzer to create a super-rotation led by Jacob deGrom.

New York’s embarrassment of riches that was a starting rotation was never at full strength. deGrom was dealing with a stress reaction of his right scapula and have yet to make a start in the 2022 campaign. Scherzer was sidelined due to an oblique injury, but has since returned.

The Mets have gotten good news regarding deGrom, as he participated in a simulated game on July 21. He threw 60 pitches in five innings and struck out 10 batters.

Even if deGrom returns, the Mets have the ability to further bolster their roster heading into the second half of the season. One area that they could fortify is their rotation. That could provide an upside for the team for the remainder of the season, and would help them hold back the Atlanta Braves for the division title.
