New York Mets fans should feel great about the latest Jacob deGrom injury update.

Despite not having Jacob deGrom all season long, the New York Mets remain one of the better teams in all of baseball.

New York leads the rival Atlanta Braves by 2.5 games in the NL East race entering the second half of the season. The Mets are two wins away from 60 on the year. Only the Los Angeles Dodgers have a better record than them in the National League entering the first weekend after the All-Star break. Though deGrom may be a little ways out, his return to the rotation seems promising.

Tim Healey of Newsday Sports reported deGrom “felt good after throwing 60 pitches across five innings in a simulated game” on Thursday night.

Latest Jacob deGrom injury update is promising for the New York Mets

The two-time NL Cy Young winner has not pitched for the Mets this season. He has been dealing with a right scapula injury all year long. While deGrom had experienced shoulder soreness not that long ago, he was able to throw 60 pitches in a simulated game without any issues. New York is in an advantageous situation where it does not need to rush back its right-handed starting pitcher.

It has been over a year since deGrom lasted pitched in the big leagues. Not since the 2019 MLB season has deGrom thrown for more than 100 innings in a campaign. Though his ERA remains blistering whenever he is out there, arm trouble has worn down the perennial NL All-Star for the Mets. At 34 years old, we must wonder if deGrom is still in his prime or has much left in the tank.

The good news for the Mets is a second-half collapse does not feel imminent for the franchise. Although Atlanta could catch them in the division race, that says more about the Braves being a great team than New York falling to pieces. Regardless, adding deGrom back at some point in the final 10 weeks of the regular season should do wonders for the Mets on their quest to win it all.

Assuming there are no further setbacks, it is only a matter of time before deGrom finally returns.
