Packers: 3 players who won’t be on the roster by September 1
1. Marcedes Lewis
Lewis is a good blocker and that’s why the Packers continue to employ him at the tight end position at the age of 38. At some point, Green Bay needs to get younger and more dynamic at the position.
This offseason seems like the perfect time to make that move. The lack of high-end talent at wide receiver is going to heap more pressure on the team’s tight ends to threaten opposing secondaries down the field. Lewis simply doesn’t possess the sort of speed to give opposing defensive backs a second thought at this stage of his career.
The argument for keeping Lewis is that he’s got a fair amount of guaranteed money on his deal and he is still an above-average blocker. That shouldn’t be enough to keep him on the roster once a more appealing, younger, more dynamic veteran gets cut by another team during camp.
It’s time for Lewis to retire and move on to the next stage of his career. Soaking up significant snaps for a Super Bowl contender isn’t the right role for him. The Packers’ front office needs to cut their safety blanket before next season begins.
