‘Scary scene’: Marlins pitcher Daniel Castano walks off field after taking line drive to the head

Miami Marlins pitcher had a massive scare when a line drive struck him in the head. Fortunately, he was able to walk off under his own power.

There are few things scarier on a baseball field than when a line drive strikes someone in the head.

Marlins pitcher Daniel Castano faced that scenario on Thursday as he pitched against the Reds in Cincinnati.

In the first inning, Donovan Solano’s 104-mph line drive drilled Castano in the forehead before being caught by the third baseman.

While Castano stayed down for a while, he was able to walk off under his own power. He was diagnosed with a concussion and a CT scan turned out normal.

Incredibly, it seems the brim of his hat took the initial contact.

The situation could have been much worse, so Castano and everyone who saw the play breathed a sigh of relief over the outcome.

“I think the first thing I asked is ‘Did we get the out?'” Castano joked, saying things went black when he was struck. “I’m a little out of it right now but definitely better and I’m just thankful.”

Castano also credited Solano for coming out to the mound to check on him.

The Marlins rode the relief of Solano being alright to a 7-6 victory over Cincinnati. They trailed going into the ninth inning before Jesus Sanchez hit a tying home run, Joey Wendle provided the lead with an RBI double and Jesus Aguilar added an insurance run with a sacrifice fly. That last run came in handy as Tommy Pham put a run on the board in the bottom of the night, but the Reds couldn’t produce a walk-off.
