4) MLB rumors: A monster New York Mets trade package for Shohei Ohtani

Steve Cohen would definitely want a toy like Ohtani for his New York Mets team. There have already been MLB rumors about general manager Billy Eppler checking in with his former employer about Ohtani’s potential availability. Ohtani coming to the Big Apple would make a lot of sense for many reasons.

The Mets are already looking for a DH and could use the added starting pitcher depth. How much would they have to give up to land him?

The full trade would send Francisco Alvarez, Ronny Mauricio, Alex Ramirez, Mark Vientos, Matt Allan, Tylor Megill, and Jose Butto to the Angels for Ohtani.

It’s going to hurt the Mets farm system a lot to acquire any major player. Teams know their owner’s endless cash flow makes them a free agent threat. They may want to hold onto players a little tighter in potential trades.

Alvarez (1) is the best prospect the Mets have and the number one player in all of Major League Baseball right now. He’s going to give them a lot of leverage in trades. It will also be real tough for teams to accept any deal without him at the center of it.

The Mets are also surrendering Mauricio (3), Vientos (5), Allan (6), and Butto (12) for Ohtani, along with big leaguer Megill. Another possibility could be to swap out Alvarez for both Brett Baty (2) and Alex Ramirez (4), depending on whether the Angels want more quality or quantity of already very good prospects.
