2. The Dodgers should target A’s RHP Frankie Montas.

If Luis Castillo was the best starting pitcher available at the trade deadline, Frankie Montas was 1A. Honestly, were it not for a shoulder injury that robbed Montas of some time in the Athletics’ rotation, one could make the argument that the Oakland hurler is the better of the two.

The Oakland A’s are in free fall and will be looking to sell anything that’s not nailed down; that may include a few seats at the Coliseum. All joking aside, if the Dodgers really want to bolster their starter rotation, Montas should be atop the list.

However, after seeing what the Cincinnati Reds received in return for Luis Castillo, we’re likely to see a similar ask in return for Montas. Both Montas and Castillo will not reach free agency until next winter. Would the Dodgers willingly give up pitching prospect Bobby Miller or even catcher Diego Cartaya?

The next best starter available with Castillo off the board is Frankie Montas. the drop off after that is pretty significant. LA’s President of Baseball Operations Andrew Friedmann will definitely be working the phones over the next few days and should be making several calls to the 510.
