St. Louis Cardinals trade for Oakland A’s ace Frankie Montas

The St. Louis Cardinals desperately need some help in their starting rotation. Entering Friday in the month of July, their starters had a 4.84 ERA, which was 25th in the sport. On the season overall, their starters have an ERA of 4.06, which is 17th in the sport.

The Cardinals also only have four pitchers with at least 10 starts on the season … and two of those are injured. Their ace Jack Flaherty has also only made three starts (combining for eight innings) on the season and he’s currently on the 60-day IL. In other words, the biggest necessity for the Cardinals is their starting rotation.

Since Luis Castillo was traded to Seattle on Friday night, Montas is the best starting pitcher that is likely to be traded.

In 2022, Montas has a 3.18 ERA in 19 starts with a 117 ERA+. He has a 3.36 FIP, a 1.127 WHIP, and an average of 2.4 walks and 9.4 strikeouts per nine innings. Last season, he came in sixth in AL Cy Young voting after posting a 3.37 ERA in an AL-leading 32 starts. In 2021, he had nearly identical stats to what he has right now.
