3) Yankees roster will not have Marwin Gonzalez by September 1

Marwin Gonzalez has made it through the season on the Yankees roster, but things could be coming to an end. Gonzalez hasn’t been a very good hitter for the club. While they surely enjoy his ability to play multiple positions, the production has left a lot to be desired.

Gonzalez would have to be designated for assignment in order for the Yankees to remove him from their roster. It’s a permanent decision, yet it’s one they should already start thinking about. The team’s backup at multiple positions, his path off of the roster is most likely through the promotion of a younger player — or possibly even the return of an injured player.

In September, Gonzalez could benefit from the extra two roster spots. With Giancarlo Stanton and Harrison Bader hopefully available as options for the Yankees, they have two bats back.

From the 40-man roster, two logical candidates to get promoted to the MLB roster over Gonzalez could be Miguel Andujar or Oswald Peraza. Even Oswaldo Cabrera is someone for them to consider. Gonzalez has filled in regularly behind Isaiah Kiner-Falefah at shortstop as needed. If the Yankees say farewell to Marwin Gonzalez, they could lean more toward a shortstop replacement, although moving Gleyber Torres to the position in an emergency situation remains one thing they could always do.

For the Yankees, whatever roster decisions they make for the rest of the year should focus on winning as many games as possible. Those choices will include tough goodbyes, important baseball decisions, and a winning attitude.
