2. The Yankees did not address the bullpen enough

The Yankees bullpen held up more than their starting rotation in July but was not as good as they were before.

From Opening Day through the end of June, the Yankees had a bullpen ERA of 2.71, which was the best in baseball. In the month of July, their ERA was 3.47, which was 13th in the sport. In the month, their setup man Michael King suffered an elbow injury, ending his season. Reliever Miguel Castro was also transferred to the 60-day IL.

They did get Lou Trivino in the trade with Frankie Montas. They also traded for Scott Effross from the Cubs so they knew they had to bring in some reinforcements but especially in September and in the postseason, not addressing the bullpen more could hurt the team.

Their bullpen still has Aroldis Chapman in it. He has been better recently … but he really couldn’t have been worse than he was a few weeks ago. He’s walking more than six batters per nine innings and his ERA is still close to 5.00.

Like with Gallo, they wouldn’t be getting a village of prospects for him but, perhaps, they could have traded him for a middle-level prospect and then traded for another MLB reliever with another team.
