3) Mets roster has no room for Dominic Smith

Dominic Smith might never get another major league at-bat for the Mets. Additions of Darin Ruf, Daniel Vogelbach, and Tyler Naquin practically ensure it. Although currently injured and making his way back from a rehab assignment, it’s clear the front office will just keep him in Triple-A once ready.

Smith had a hugely disappointing year for New York in what should have been a great opportunity to share the field with Pete Alonso. Smith was a brilliant role player for the team in 2019 and then reached a whole new level in 2020 when he actually received mild MVP consideration.

Those days are long over. Struggles throughout the 2021 season signed his playing time death warrant. The organization has decided to never let him play left field again. Instead, he has been a DH and first base option exclusively for them this year.

Things have gone real well with all of the Mets trade deadline additions. Smith is hardly missed. If not for being injured at the time of the deadline, we very well could have seen him moved. Instead, he stays put and will probably become another offseason candidate to get moved. Otherwise, Syracuse might get a little too familiar for him. The Mets are showing they don’t have room for him anymore nor do they plan to make any.
