Steelers who earned a roster spot: Gunner Olszewski

Olszewski is a return man trying to reinvent himself as a wide receiver.

The former Patriots special teams player was employed in that role for a reason — Bill Belichick knows how to identify a player’s strengths, and use them. Olszewski isn’t happy with just being a return specialist, however. He wants to play some offense as well.

While the Steelers will undoubtedly ask Olszewski to play special teams, he’ll likely get some time in shotgun sets as well. If he contributes the way he did on Saturday night, he could quickly become a fan favorite in Pittsburgh.

Olszewski led all receivers with 47 yards on three catches. He also scored a touchdown thanks to Trubisky.

Olszewski’s roster spot was never really in jeopardy, as he’s signed to a two-year deal with over $1 million guaranteed. But anyone questioning Pittsburgh’s intentions with him now knows he’ll be used as a two-way player, rather than just a return specialist.
