Yankees fans immediately crash from walk-off high after disaster vs. Blue Jays
By Scott Rogust
After Josh Donaldson hit a walk-off grand slam the night prior, the New York Yankees fell back to Earth in their game against the Toronto Blue Jays on Aug. 18.
Things have not been going well for the New York Yankees ever since they returned from the All-Star break. They have lost the past five series in a row, with the once-potent batting order being unable to produce runs. There was some hope on Wednesday night, however, as Josh Donaldson hit a walk-off grand slam to help the team pick up the 8-7 win in extra innings.
With Yankees fans riding high after that win and the high amount of runs scored, they fell back down to reality on Tuesday night. In their series opener against the Toronto Blue Jays, Yankees trade deadline acquisition Frankie Montas surrendered five runs in the second inning in his home debut with the team.
Yankees fans, much like they have since the team’s slump began, took to Twitter to type through it.

New York had the goal of bringing in one of the top starting pitchers on the trading block at the Aug. 2 deadline. After losing out on Luis Castillo to the Seattle Mariners, the Yankees pivoted and ultimately acquired Montas from the Oakland Athletics. Ever since joining the Yankees, well, Montas has had difficulty holding off the opposing team.
In the second inning, the Blue Jays scored their five runs off Montas after Santiago Espinal reached on a fielder’s choice, an RBI single by George Springer, and a three-run homer by Vladimir Guerrero Jr. over the short porch.
Montas pitched a full six innings, surrendering six earned runs on eight hits, where he recorded just two strikeouts and walked one batter.
There was some good news during the loss. Oswaldo Cabrera, the team’s No. 14 prospect, recorded his first career hit on a double in the fourth inning.
While the Yankees have mentioned frequently that they still have a hefty lead in the AL East, eventually that will decrease further if they don’t break out of this funk. Let’s not forget that they lost the top seed in the American League to the Houston Astros.
Entering the game, they are 4-11 in the month of August, a span in which only the Washington Nationals and the Detroit Tigers have a worse record. That is not a distinction you want to hold, especially since this was a team that played like perennial World Series contenders in the first half of the season.
The fanbase will continue to hope that the old Yankees from earlier this year return soon Until then, they will continue to voice their displeasure with the team.
