MLB owners who should sell: Tigers owner Chris Ilitch

As much as his father loved the Tigers — and poured a ton of money into the team before his passing — Chris Ilitch does not view the team the same way.

Chris is not a baseball guy, admittedly so, and much prefers his hockey asset — the NHL’s Detroit Red Wings. With that in mind, what’s the point of owning a baseball team if you don’t like baseball?

Ilitch has not lived up to his father’s billing with the Tigers, and likely never will. Detroit is now in the second iteration of its rebuild, and Ilitch is nothing more than a yes man. He employed Al Avila for nearly a decade simply because he was a nice guy. Avila sounds great, but that’s not how you run a professional sports franchise.

And on the way out, Ilitch failed to take responsibility for Avila’s failings, merely stating that he did not make the respective trades reporters were asking about (see Verlander, Justin).

Ilitch is unlikely to sell the Tigers, as are most of the owners on this list. But if one franchise is worthy of a quick turnaround, it’s Detroit. They are quite clearly the worst sports city in America right now, and it’s not even close. Which Detroit sports team is even close to contending?

Promising rebuilds don’t count, and the Tigers are a prime example of that. Sell the team, Chris.
