The Minnesota Vikings will have to trim down their roster to 53 players by the Aug. 30 deadline. Here are three surprise cuts the team could make.

The Minnesota Vikings are looking to rebound from back-to-back seasons of missing the playoffs. After the 2021 campaign, the organization decided they have seen enough from general manager Rick Spielman and head coach Mike Zimmer and began searching for suitable replacements. Former Cleveland Browns vice president of football operations Kwesi Adofo-Mensah was named the new general manager, while Los Angeles Rams offensive coordinator Kevin O’Connell was named head coach.

With there being one more preseason game remaining on the schedule for all 32 teams, they will have to trim down their rosters to 53 players by the Aug. 30 deadline. Considering that this is a new regime leading the Vikings, they could be some surprise moves made ahead of Minnesota’s season-opener against the Green Bay Packers.

Here are three potential surprise cuts the Vikings could make. The keyword is could.

3. Vikings surprise cuts: Wyatt Davis, G

Adding a player who was just drafted last year as a potential cut candidate is shocking. But when you look at their status with the team, it begins to make sense. That is the case with offensive guard Wyatt Davis.

Last year, the Vikings used their third-round pick to select Davis out of Ohio State. He played very well for the Buckeyes, as he was named to the First Team All-Big 10 in 2019 and 2020, and earned All-American honors those years as well.

Since joining the Vikings, Davis played in a total of six games in his first season, none of which were starts.

Now, in training camp, the team lists Davis as a third-string right guard on their depth chart. Considering that this is a new regime, his placement on the depth chart could be a sign that he may not be on the team much longer.
