Chiefs greatest moments No. 4: Derrick Thomas’ seven-sack game

On Nov. 11, 1990, Chiefs Hall of Fame defensive end Derrick Thomas set the NFL record for most sacks by a player in a game. Seattle was in Kansas City and DT got to then-Seahawks quarterback Dave Kreig a record-setting seven times. The game ended in a Seattle victory, 17-16, after Kreig narrowly eluded Thomas — inches from racking up his eighth sack of the day — with four seconds left on the play clock and heaved a 30-yard pass to the end zone that was hauled in to finish the Seahawks come-from-behind win.

Having NFL records posted in their team’s archive is plenty special to fans, but it was more than the numbers of DT’s historic day that Chiefs fans hold onto. Everybody knew that Thomas was a generational talent, and a shoo-in for the hall someday, but following that November loss to Seattle, his quote confirmed to Chiefs Kingdom just the kind of player he was.

When asked about the final play of the game, DT said, “I thought I had him… that last sack that I didn’t get is the one that I’ll remember.”

Having a stud pass rusher on your team is unlike anything else, but when that player is driven by winning more so than their own success, it makes a bigger impact on the team’s culture. Derrick Thomas left an eternal mark on the intensely passionate culture of the fanbase as well.
