1. Green Bay emerges as Top 5 run defense in league

This offseason, Packers’ general manager Brian Gutekunst secured the services of a veteran defensive tackle via free agency and added a pair of defenders from the national champion Georgia Bulldogs.

One-time Seattle Seahawks’ interior presence Jarran Reed spent the season with the Kansas City Chiefs. He’s joined by two first-round picks in linebacker Quay Walker and defensive lineman Devonte Wyatt. These additions hope to have an immediate impact for coordinator Joe Barry.

In each of the past two years, the Packers have allowed the ninth-fewest total yards in the league. But when it came to stopping the run, this team failed to crack the Top 10 in this category. It is actually a shortcoming that has plagued the team for far too many years.

It’s safe to say that the Green Bay defense has been around too many times by some of the more persistent and physical offensive lines in the league. The new faces along the front seven should help immensely. And there will be plenty of tests early on as the Packers travel to Minnesota (Week 3) and Tampa Bay (Week 3) in September. But look for Barry’s upgraded unit to be up to the challenge.
