Projected AP Top 25 college football rankings after Week 1: No. 4-3

4. Clemson Tigers

Clemson hasn’t seen the field yet despite the loaded Saturday slate as Dabo Swinney will lead his team into action on Monday night as they go on the road to face Georgia Tech in Mercedes-Benz Stadium. But after a down year for the Tigers, hope has been renewed for this team as they are eyeing being in the College Football Playoff picture again, and not the expanded field either.

The defense figures to be an elite unit once again and could have an argument for being one of the best in the country. As was the case last year, though, the big question is on offense. D.J. Uiagalelei will get another crack as the starting quarterback but now he’ll be pushed by prized freshman Cade Klubnik. Most importantly, though, Will Shipley is back and healthy, meaning that no matter who is under center, Clemson should have a reliable offensive identity in the 2022 season.

3. Georgia Bulldogs

If there were any worries about the Bulldogs after winning the natty given the incredible amount of talent that they lost to the NFL Draft, Kirby Smart made sure to put that to rest inside the Benz on Saturday afternoon.

Even if Georgia was facing former defensive coordinator Dan Lanning, you wouldn’t have known there was any familiarity between the two parties because the Dawgs absolutely had their way. Stetson Bennett moved the ball at will with his arm and legs, the defense swarmed Bo Nix and made his life a hellish experience, and they simply looked the part of a title contender once again.

There’s not really any room to move UGA up after their 49-3 win over the Ducks because of what happened with Ohio State and Alabama, but if there was any gap between the Top 2 and Georgia, it has been substantially shrunken after the season-opener.
