The Pittsburgh Steelers have all but announced who their starting quarterback will be this season, and it’s bad news for Kenny Pickett fans.

The Pittsburgh Steelers are days away from their 2022 season-opening game against the rival Cincinnati Bengals. Fans know that the Bengals are starting Joe Burrow at quarterback for the game, but there was uncertainty surrounding who would get the nod for Pittsburgh. Head coach Mike Tomlin has played it coy, but now the hints are there as to who will be leading the offense.

There has been an update, and it is not good for fans who wanted first-round pick Kenny Pickett to start.

On Monday, Sept. 5, the Steelers revealed who were the captains for the upcoming season. One of them is Mitch Trubisky, who the team signed to a two-year contract in free agency.

Steelers hint that Mitch Trubisky will be starting QB

There was more shortly after the announcement of the team captains for the 2022 season.

On the team’s official website, the depth chart lists Trubisky as the top quarterback. Mason Rudolph is the second-string signal caller, with Pickett listed as third.

Trubisky is the former 2017 second-overall pick by the Chicago Bears. He did have a strong sophomore season in 2018, but never replicated it. Ultimately, his fifth-year option was declined, and he hit free agency in 2021, signing a one-year deal with the Buffalo Bills to sit behind Josh Allen. Now, it looks as though he will be heading into the season as their starter.

In the preseason, Trubisky completed 24-of-34 of his passes for 283 yards and two touchdowns in three games.

As for Pickett, he was the first quarterback selected in this year’s class, and he impressed throughout the preseason. Through three preseason games, Pickett threw for 261 yards and three touchdowns while completing 29-of-36 of his pass attempts.

It is important to note that the team has yet to officially announce that Trubisky is the starter for Week 1, but it looks as though it is trending that way.
