3. Top Fantasy Football Pickups for Week 2 – San Francisco 49ers RB Jeff Wilson Jr.

Investing in the San Francisco running game is never an easy choice since the 49ers have a ton of options to carry the rock. Deebo Samuel vultured some of the work from running backs at the end of last season while Trey Lance will take some more as well, but any potential clarity in the backfield is a help to fantasy owners.

That clarity may have come in the form of injury as Elijah Mitchell left the 49ers’ Week 1 loss to the Chicago Bears with a knee issue. Mitchell did not return, leaving the official running back work to Wilson, who became Mitchell’s backup after the 49ers moved on from Trey Sermon during the preseason.

Wilson got nine carries for 22 yards in relief of Mitchell, mixing in with Samuel as the 49ers’ primary ball carriers. We should have more clarity on Mitchell’s injury situation in the next few days but there is value in having a running back on a team that will rely primarily on the ground game this season.

Rostered in just 16 percent of Yahoo leagues, Wilson will be one of the week’s most popular pickups if Mitchell is sidelined for a significant period of time. There is some risk here as San Francisco could opt to add to its running back room but right now it looks as if Wilson is the guy to grab in this backfield.
