Mike Tomlin’s thoughts on Mitchell Trubisky won’t inspire hope in Steelers fans

The Pittsburgh Steelers have seen two miserable games from Mitchell Trubisky. That should be enough evidence to promote Kenny Pickett to start in Week 3.

The Steelers made it through Week 1 with Mitchell Trubisky as their quarterback. It wasn’t pretty but they got a victory.

In Week 2, it was a different story. Pittsburgh fell to the Patriots on Sunday in a 17-14 game that featured poor quarterback play and stagnant offense.

Even head coach Mike Tomlin had no way to sugarcoat the performance of his quarterback. When asked, he essentially deflected the question.

“I have to look at the tape in terms of an evaluation standpoint but obviously we collectively didn’t make enough plays today, he included,” Tomlin said.

If you’re a Steelers fan, how can that possibly inspire you?

Steelers not starting Kenny Pickett in Week 3 would be negligence

Head coaches say they need to look at the tape when they have nothing positive to say. There really wasn’t much Tomlin could have said on Sunday. Trubisky had just 168 yards passing. He threw a late touchdown but also had an interception and took three sacks. His QB rating was 73.8.

If that’s what Pittsburgh is going to get from Trubisky, then they might as well start Kenny Pickett.

Pickett may have less experience, but his ceiling is higher and fans are certainly more eager to see what he can do. Some growing pains from a rookie would be better than living through bad play from a more veteran figure.

Steelers fans can only hope Tomlin looks at the tape and realizes that the Pickett era should start sooner than later. Waiting will only frustrate everyone while putting Pittsburgh in danger of suffering more frustrating losses.
