Amid the many storylines coming out of the kickoff to the 2022 NFL season was the fact that Allen Robinson was a non-factor.

It was a tough truth to swallow, with is why film started circulating the internet indicating that Robinson was wide open on several passes and was often passed over for Matthew Stafford’s favorite receiver, Cooper Kupp. Fans even started joking about the fact that Robinson wasn’t invited to Stafford-Kupp breakfast dates, with memes that reeked of Mean Girls “you can’t sit with us” energy.

Of course, that’s all in jest, as the reality is that Robinson is still new to the Rams. Even though Robinson is in his ninth NFL season on his third NFL team, coming to a new team always takes some adjusting. Matthew Stafford and Tom Brady make it look easy, but Russell Wilson’s tenure in Denver is more often the reality.

There’s also a difference between coming in as a quarterback and as a receiver. Stafford built chemistry with Kupp in 2021, and Kupp reciprocated by landing nearly all of his passes — Kupp became an early favorite who powered the team to the Super Bowl and through their game-winning drive of the championship. It would be hard for anyone to arrive and eat on that offense, even Robinson, who has been no less brilliant than Kupp.

So seeing Robinson score on Sunday proved to be not just a comeback from an empty-handed Week 1, but the beginning of something beautiful on a potential championship team. Robinson has barely been able to flex in the postseason: he was injured in 2017 and played only one game in 2018 and 2020, respectively.

If the Rams are going to run it back in 2022, Robinson needs to be a part of that. It’s nice to see him get a slice of the action so early on.
