49ers fans have been done with Jimmy Garoppolo.

The organization, too, seemed to be done with Garoppolo, yet they refused to finalize trade moves all offseason.

Finally, they re-signed Garoppolo as insurance behind Trey Lance, a decision that may have salvaged their season.

At the very least, it saved them in Week 2 from losing at the hands of the Seattle Seahawks.

Trey Lance’s 2022 season has tragically ended before it could truly begin, as the second-year quarterback suffered a season-ending ankle injury on the second offensive drive for the 49ers. Before his injury, Lance did not demonstrate the promise that prompted San Francisco to select him with the No. 3 overall pick last year, and now fans will have to wait another year before they can see if Lance can be the next Steve Young.

But for now, the 49ers are thrust back into their situationship with Jimmy G, and in Week 2, it worked out rather well for them.

It wasn’t a shootout on Sunday — Geno Smith passed for 197 yards; Garoppolo passed for 154 yards — but Garoppolo did score one rushing touchdown and one passing touchdown.

49ers fans seem to be always wishing for the next great quarterback that will return their franchise to glory, hence the emphasis on trying Lance. Garoppolo has struggled with injury and inconsistency, yet he did take the team all the way to the Super Bowl in 2019. At the same time, he also was to blame for losing it at the last minute.

It’s unclear how Jimmy will be received by San Francisco this season, but he was rightfully celebrated for winning the game in Week 2. His teammates were happy to have him back, and he was happy to be back. Here’s to Jimmy proving he can, and Lance proving he will be able to in future seasons.
